WELCOME TO IBIZA'S RESCUE AND REHABILITATION HOME FOR INJURED HEDGEHOGS AND ORPHANED HOGLETS.

Founded in 2017, we are Ibiza’s only licensed wildlife sanctuary for this endangered, indigenous species. We rescue hundreds of hedgehogs a year, and all are returned to their natural habitat after they recover. Our work is made possible by kind donations from those who bring in hedgehogs for treatment. We also have a team of amazing volunteers who host beautiful release sites across the island.

OUR WORK

RUNNING CAN HOG IS A ROUND-THE-CLOCK OPERATION, AND WITH YOUR HELP WE CAN DO MORE TO SUPPORT THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES!

MEDICAL CARE

Our hedgehogs receive experienced medical care in a dedicated facility in Port Des Torrent, with capacity for up to 20 animals. We administer a range of medications, injections and natural cleansing baths, to cure our hedgehogs.

FEEDING & CLEANING

We have a regular daily routine, from early morning till late at night, feeding and looking after our hedgehogs, as well as cleaning their boxes and the centre itself. Our hoglets need feeding every 2 hours, including through the night.

PICK UP & RELEASE

Hedgehogs are generally delivered by people who find them, though we can organise collection in some cases. We host an early release site next to our facility. When they are healthy enough, hedgehogs are sent to a volunteer-run network of natural-environment release sites.

MANAGEMENT

Aside from the day-to-day care of our hedgehogs, we have a full schedule of running the Can Hog association – from purchasing supplies to liaising with local veterinary clinics.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

We run educational programmes in local schools, host family visits on weekends (by prior appointment), and also do our part through print and social media to highlight the importance of caring for these precious animals.

ABOUT OUR FOUNDER

Can Hog was founded by Adila Hiam, who has over 25 years’ experience in animal care.

Adila holds a qualification in hedgehog care from the Vale Wildlife Hospital in the UK.

Before moving to Ibiza, Adila ran a horse riding centre with 30 horses in Malawi for 15 years with her husband, Johnny. This required them performing all basic veterinary care.
